Some of the details are sparse, and Microsoft&amp;#8217;s plans are likely to change significantly between now and the actual release of Windows 8. But, based on Microsoft&amp;#8217;s current planning, here&amp;#8217;s a look at 8 amazing things you&amp;#8217;ll be able to do with Windows 8:&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Log in to your PC with your face, instead of a password&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;By 2012 sensors such as microphones, cameras, GPS, accelerometers, and temperature and magnetic sensors will be common in most PCs, allowing Windows 8 to interact with the user&amp;#8217;s environment in new and interesting ways.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;One scenario uses facial recognition software to verify a user&amp;#8217;s identity.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;&amp;#8220;Amish walks into his home office,&amp;#8221; Microsoft writes in one of many fictional scenarios outlined in the Windows 8 slide decks. &amp;#8220;The proximity sensor on his PC detects motion, and wakes the PC. By the time Amish sits down, his PC is powered up. It scans his face and logs him in. finally, when Amish gets up and leaves, his PC notices that he&amp;#8217;s gone and locks itself and powers down.&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Windows 8 may also eliminate the need for remembering passwords across multiple websites.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;&amp;#8220;Password pain has reached a tipping point,&amp;#8221; Microsoft says. &amp;#8220;Windows 8 could include a way to securely store usernames and passwords, simplifying the online experience&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Make Windows 8 follow you across devices&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Microsoft wants to make your Windows identity user-centric, rather than machine-centric, meaning your settings and preferences would roam with you as you move from a desktop to a laptop, and to smaller devices like slate machines (read: a Windows 8 version of Apple&amp;#8217;s iPad).&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;&amp;#8220;Windows accounts could be connected to cloud to make it easy to roam settings and preferences,&amp;#8221; Microsoft says.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Users of tomorrow may have a laptop for productivity applications, writing e-mail and organizing photos, movies and music, and a slate optimized for web and media consumption, causal gaming, IM and social networking, and reading and sorting e-mail. With the same Windows 8 login across devices, a user might start a game on one machine and then finish it on another.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Importantly, the software license will roam with a user, Microsoft says in one slide.&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Use iPad-like touch screens &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Microsoft is telling partners it will outdo Apple by building a better touch screen for slate PCs. Windows 8 will also support accelerometers and location-awareness for gaming and other functions, while adjusting the screen brightness to changes in light.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;&amp;#8220;Users are able to hold their slate/tablet PCs in any orientation and Windows will smoothly and automatically change the screen orientation to accommodate,&amp;#8221; Microsoft says. &amp;#8220;Users never have to think to interact using touch on their slates. Users can type confidently and efficiently on the soft keyboard with touch. The soft keyboard is easily launched, text prediction is more accurate, the UI is more usable, and throughput is increased for everyone. We can adapt to changes in ambient light, so that the display is always easy to see.&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Watch HD movies on your wireless TV&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Windows 8 will integrate with a variety of technologies to let users pick out TV shows and movies and stream them to any screen. Turn on your laptop, find a movie online or in your hard drive, and with a click of a button you&amp;#8217;ll be able to watch it on whichever TV screen you choose.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;&amp;#8220;Users can easily discover and connect to a wide variety of modern displays like wireless televisions and monitors, wireless docking stations, and USB-connected monitors,&amp;#8221; Microsoft says. &amp;#8220;The user can easily light up displays around him with all his content and media, whether it is online or local. Developers can build modern experiences around display devices by leveraging Windows 8 support for premium media experiences, such as stereoscopic 3D and wireless TVs.&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Download apps from the Windows App Store&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;A new app store based on the model made popular by Apple is mentioned in many of Microsoft&amp;#8217;s Windows 8 slides. While Microsoft insists that users still need an operating system in the age of the Internet, the App Store is one of the ways in which Microsoft is adapting Windows to the web world.  &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;There isn&amp;#8217;t a lot of information about what types of apps the store will contain, but Microsoft is trying to appeal to developers by letting them create apps in whichever language they prefer. The hope, obviously, is to provide a wide array of applications to rival the offerings of the Apple and Android stores.&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Kill a virus, but keep your personal data&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Viruses, unfortunately, often force users to restore their machines to the factory settings, a painful process that involves loss of applications and personal data. Microsoft, however, is working on a new reset option that will retain files and personalization settings while giving users an easy way to reinstall applications.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;In one of the scenarios detailed in Microsoft slide decks, a user named &amp;#8220;Jon&amp;#8221; (no relation to me) decides to reset his Windows 8 PC.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;&amp;#8220;Jon notices that his Windows 8 PC is starting to perform poorly and he can&amp;#8217;t figure out what to do,&amp;#8221; the slide deck says. &amp;#8220;He presses the reset button and chooses to reset his windows 8 PC. &amp;#8230; knowing that all his stuff is safe. Windows 8 automatically retains files and personalization settings, and migrates the user accounts. Windows is restored to the factory image and restarts. After restarting Jon can launch the App Store to reinstall applications he purchased there and see a list of other applications that he had installed outside of the App Store.&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Boot your machine near-instantly&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Microsoft seems to be putting a premium on improving the start times in Windows 8. A March 2010 Windows Planning Survey polled 545 customers about 21 user activities, and found that starting the computer tops the list when it comes to &amp;#8220;highest importance/lowest satisfaction in terms of speed and performance.&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Mean boot times have decreased from 40 seconds to 27 seconds from Windows Vista to Windows 7, according to the slides, but Microsoft wants greater improvement.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;&amp;#8220;Boot performance is getting better but it is not &amp;#8216;instant on&amp;#8217;&amp;#8221;, as one slide says.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Technologies in development could cut boot time in half, Microsoft&amp;#8217;s planning slides suggest. Windows 8 may also include a &amp;#8220;new off state combining the best of hibernate with a boot/shutdown look and feel.&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Take more control over your machine&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;One goal of Windows 8 is to simplify the user experience, but Microsoft also wants to give the savviest users new ways of interacting with the operating system. He didn&amp;#8217;t try.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Tech companies, on the other hand, try with all their might to come across as cool. Sometimes, they succeed&amp;#8212;Apple&amp;#8217;s &lt;a href="http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/187197/find_every_get_a_mac_ad_in_one_location.html"&gt;&amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m a Mac&amp;#8221; ads&lt;/a&gt; managed to project an air of coolness that stuck for years&amp;#8212;but equally often, their attempts to connect with consumers make them look more out of touch than Mr. Magoo at a Megadeath concert.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Ultimately, it all comes down to something I call &amp;#8220;The Dude principle of coolness&amp;#8221;: If you&amp;#8217;re actually trying, odds are, you&amp;#8217;re failing. And the harder you try, the greater those odds become.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Here are 10 times when tech companies&amp;#8217; attempts failed miserably.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;1. MSI Takes a Crack at Viral Video&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://us.msi.com/index.php?func=prodpage1&amp;amp;maincat_no=135"&gt;MSI&lt;/a&gt; tried to hop on the pop culture bandwagon with &lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiNaadVOQEM"&gt;this astoundingly disturbing video&lt;/a&gt; published to the Net in 2009. The clip shows a couple of guys in Spandex onesies (strike one) throwing laptops at each other (strike two) and catching them in certain unmentionable crevices (strike three&amp;#8230;you&amp;#8217;re out!). Take a look:&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;MSI&amp;#8217;s concept, from what I can best surmise, was to show off the superthin profile of its new &lt;a href="http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/160464/msis_svelte_xslim_laptops_to_get_more_powerful.html?tk=rel_news"&gt;X-Slim laptops&lt;/a&gt;. And given the popularity of shows like MTV&amp;#8217;s &amp;#8220;Jackass,&amp;#8221; you can see how a team of suit-wearing hacks might have seen the stunt as a cheeky way (so to speak) of grabbing college kids&amp;#8217; attention.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;What MSI failed to realize was that there&amp;#8217;s a difference between making people cringe and making them want to buy your product. This asinine stunt fails to accomplish the latter&amp;#8212;no ifs, ands, or butts about it.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;2. Sony Gets a Bad Rap&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Talk about a flop: Sony&amp;#8217;s 2006 attempt at connecting with the &amp;#8220;cool kids&amp;#8221; was so bad, the company actually had to apologize.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Remember this one? Sony &lt;a href="http://blogs.pcworld.com/digitalworld/archives/2006/12/sonys_failed_bi.html"&gt;hired a marketing company&lt;/a&gt; to create what was supposed to look like a teenager&amp;#8217;s blog. That &amp;#8220;teenager,&amp;#8221; of course, was an employee who blogged exclusively about how he and his pals really wanted a Sony PlayStation Portable for Christmas.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The crowning moment came when &lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0G0LlXv-nyI"&gt;a video&lt;/a&gt; surfaced showing the blogger&amp;#8217;s &amp;#8220;cousin&amp;#8221; Pete rapping about the PSP. It’s one of the most common questions I hear in the office of the CIO.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;For IT leaders, it’s a critical part of how they get close to and provide services to the business of which they are a part.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Over the last 10 years, I have seen a number of instances where IT has been “configured” or “set up” as internal consultants to the business. In other words, these companies seek to apply the principles of the operating model used by consulting firms as the basis for the operating model for the IT group within a larger organization.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;In some cases this merely means having two or three “consultant-like” managers who act as the primary interface to internal customer groups. In other cases, some go as far as creating a full consulting-like organization that issues proposals that compete with mainstream consulting firms like IBM and Accenture.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Before I share my feelings on this topic with you, let’s take a closer look at what’s behind the idea of having IT as internal consultants–the pros and the cons of this idea and what it’s trying to achieve.&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;h3&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The business case&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;  &lt;p&gt;There are three big reasons for setting up IT as a group of internal consultants. They go something like this:&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;ol type="1"&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;Internal IT      consultants are more invested in their companies&lt;/em&gt;. They put their companies’      needs and priorities first. External consultants are more concerned with      their own financial goals and selling the next engagement.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;Internal IT      consultants save time.&lt;/em&gt; There’s less ramp up time on projects because the internal consultants      already know the business and the people.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;Internal IT      consultants save money&lt;/em&gt;.      External IT consultants have additional sales and marketing expenses,      overhead, and profit requirements. Using internal resources to do the same      work as external consultants saves money because the hourly rate is far      less for internal people with the same skills.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;/ol&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Sounds like a winner&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;  &lt;p&gt;On the face of it, these benefits seem compelling. What’s more, configured as consultants, the IT group has a better opportunity to get closer to the business and to proactively meet its needs.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Unfortunately, this idea doesn’t quite hold up in the real world. In place of the expected benefits, I have seen instead a number of “sticky” problems brought on by this approach. They are usually some variation of:&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;ol type="1"&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;Internal      consultants often suffer from a skill gap. &lt;/em&gt;The title consultant brings      with it an expectation of certain skills and expertise. Just calling someone      a consultant doesn’t make him one.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;Internal      consultants lack external perspective. &lt;/em&gt;Internal consultants don’t have the perspective      of working with other customers. They can’t bring the best practices of      other corporations to their consulting roles.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;Internal      consultants lack the credibility of the outsiders&lt;/em&gt;. Right or wrong, there is a      widespread perception that there are no prophets in their own lands. And      this certainly holds true here. Internal consultants are viewed as colleagues not external experts¾no matter what we call them. This limits their      ability to challenge the status quo and drive change.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;Internal      consultants quickly turn into salespeople.&lt;/em&gt; Configured as consultants      and taking their cue from their business model, internal consultants can’t      help but start to “peddle” their ideas and projects to their business      colleagues. After all, they have to keep busy or else they will be      “fired.” &lt;em&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;Internal      consultants are subject to internal political constraints&lt;/em&gt;. It’s not easy to be part      of an organization and independent from it at the same time.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;Internal      consultants suffer from the negative perception of all consultants&lt;/em&gt;. Consulting is often      referred to as the second oldest profession in the world with many of the      same attributes as the oldest. ‘Nuff said.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;/ol&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;strong&gt;My perspective-and it’s probably not what you’re expecting&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Personally, I love the idea of having IT personnel &lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;function&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; like consultants but I absolutely hate the idea of &lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;calling&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; IT internal consultants.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;I think the idea of having IT function like consultants is fundamentally sound. A lot of the value external consultants bring comes from their highly competent execution and management of pretty straightforward, non-expertise type functions, functions such as:&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;ul type="disc"&gt;&lt;li&gt;Business analysis&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;li&gt;Process design&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;li&gt;Presentation development&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;li&gt;Meeting and workshop facilitation&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;li&gt;Project management&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;And last, but certainly not least, basic work practices like taking good meeting notes, following up proactively and generally being on top of things.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Reading the above list, I trust you agree that every IT department should absolutely be building these competencies in their people at every level of the organization. It’s not hard to see that a move in this direction will dramatically improve IT’s standing within the organization.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;However, the idea of calling internal IT professionals “consultants” and asking them to face off with customers like an external vendor just doesn’t work. Both events were incredibly energy consuming for me because I was a key decision-maker, the coordinator of communication between family members, a key source of &lt;a href="http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifehack/how-to-stay-organized-when-life-throws-you-a-curveball.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+LifeHack+%28lifehack.org%29#" target="undefined" style="text-decoration: underline ! important;"&gt;&lt;span class="kLink" style="color: rgb(51, 102, 204) ! important;"&gt;emotional &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="kLink" style="color: rgb(51, 102, 204) ! important;"&gt;support&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, and I had my own fears and other feelings to manage.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It was all I could do to get through each day dealing with the crisis at hand, much less tend to my small business and maintain order in my home. Those two crises were an opportunity for me to learn how to get through difficult times without losing control of other parts of my life.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Here are 6 of the important lessons I learned:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;1. Identify tasks to be done no matter what.&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;Then do them! I am the money manager in our house. So, making sure bills got paid and that money was in the right accounts at the right time were two tasks I had to get done so we could avoid consequences like ruining our credit rating. Keeping us afloat financially during those difficult times helped ground me. I liked knowing that no matter what else happened, we were operating on a firm financial foundation.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;2. Defer whatever tasks you can to other people.&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;Instead of trying to keep everything in order by myself, I asked my husband to do many tasks that normally I would have done to maintain our home and our lives together.&lt;br/&gt; Also, people offer help during times of crisis. Let them! Last summer when I had bi-lateral bunion surgery I asked friends to help provide food and walk my dogs. They were happy to have something to do that would help me, and their help provided a type of emotional support I really needed.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;3. Lighten your load by eliminating obligations.&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;It became clear to me pretty quickly that helping my mother and step-father through my step-father’s &lt;a href="http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifehack/how-to-stay-organized-when-life-throws-you-a-curveball.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+LifeHack+%28lifehack.org%29#" target="undefined" style="text-decoration: underline ! important;"&gt;&lt;span class="kLink" style="color: rgb(51, 102, 204) ! important;"&gt;health&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; crisis and staying healthy myself during that stressful process was more important than writing checks for a professional organization. I actually chose to resign from two volunteer positions because taking care of family and myself were the priority.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;strong&gt;4. Control paper flow even if you can’t regularly process it.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;You may not have time to do much with paper that flows into your house on a daily basis, but you can make sure that it all flows to the same place. That way, when you need to find something in that pile of paper, you have only one place to look. You might stack it in piles in your home office or get an open box and store it there. Just don’t let it float throughout your space!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you want to go one step further, pull out bills and magazines/catalogs/newsletters. Put the bills in a highly visible location so you don’t forget about them and so they are easily accessible when you are ready to pay them. Place the magazine, catalogs and other reading materials in a location where you spend time reading. Removing those items from your paper pile will make it shrink and also make it easier to access things to read when you need a source of distraction.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;5. Resist the urge to do nothing.&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;In times of personal crisis it is very normal to shut down because of overwhelm, &lt;a href="http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifehack/how-to-stay-organized-when-life-throws-you-a-curveball.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+LifeHack+%28lifehack.org%29#" target="undefined" style="text-decoration: underline ! important;"&gt;&lt;span class="kLink" style="color: rgb(51, 102, 204) ! important;"&gt;fatigue&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, or just not knowing what to do. While it is important to take breaks to rest, recharge, and recover, it is not a good idea to go to ground and let everything go. It takes only a day or two for your space to go from being a peaceful haven to a chaotic nightmare. Then you not only have a crisis going on outside your home, but also inside your home. You have no safe place to retreat. Messy houses scream, “You slob! Why don’t you do something about this mess!” Make yourself do at least the bare minimum to maintain order, like controlling the paper flow, washing the dishes, straightening up daily.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;6. Remember that maintaining a basic order will ground you during difficult times.&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;You may resist doing maintenance activities because you are exhausted, but if you override the urge to stop and plop on the sofa and instead do a few tasks to keep your space neat and organized, you will find that doing those things will help ground and calm you. You will then be better able to go out and deal with whatever challenge is going on. If you are physically incapable of maintaining order yourself, because of illness or disability, ask others to help you do that. Many people want to help in some way. It even hash funny mini-figures on the top.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Legend has it that the reason for the LEGO construction was that the Google guys needed an easily expandable, and cheap way to house 10&amp;#160;4&amp;#160;GB hard drives, and LEGO fit the bill. Whether the primary colors of the bricks used were the hues that went on to inspire the Google logo’s design is up for debate, but we’d guess it wasn’t just a coincidence.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;4. Yes you read that right. It rents goats from a company called &lt;a href="http://www.californiagrazing.com/" target="_blank"&gt;California Grazing&lt;/a&gt; to help cut down the amount of weeds and brush at Google HQ.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The operation of 200 goats (plus herder and a border collie) is kind to the environment, and as Google puts it: “A lot cuter to watch than lawn mowers.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;6. Yoshka accompanies Urs Holzle, senior VP operations and Google Fellow to the Googleplex. Less senior staff are also allowed to bring their dogs to the office.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;According to Google’s “Dog Policy”, one indiscretion too many on the Google carpets, or aggressive behavior, means Lassie will have to stay at home in the future. Strong bladdered and friendly canines are more than welcome across the campus.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Unfortunately, cats are not quite as welcome. Here’s an excerpt taken directly from &lt;a href="http://investor.google.com/corporate/code-of-conduct.html" target="_blank"&gt;Google’s Code of Conduct&lt;/a&gt;: “Google’s affection for our canine friends is an integral facet of our corporate culture. We like cats, but we’re a dog company, so as a general rule we feel cats visiting our offices would be fairly stressed out.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;8. Good thing they also have a &lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5S3meosuUw" target="_blank"&gt;Google gym&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Backing this up, here’s a stat from Google — “Bay Area Googlers consumed approximately 5,500 pounds of handmade chocolates from the snack bins in the microkitchens in 2007.” Wow.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;9. To this day, some 40% of our blog visits have come from Twitter links.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It’s also important to remember that not everything that happens on social media needs to stay on social media.  Magar tells the story of getting into a sold-out food event because she heard about it on Twitter and offered herself as a substitute for a cancelled participant.  It translated into exposure with over 150 food journalists.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;Turning Marketing Opportunities into Sales&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;For many organizations, the CEO is also the chief sales person.  That was the situation with Scott Imbrie, CEO of &lt;a href="http://www.originalskateboards.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"&gt;Original Skateboards, LLC&lt;/a&gt;.  Eight years ago, he started a skateboard company with his brother using their would-have-been college funds.  “For six years, we generally broke-even.  While we were growing the overall size of our business, we were still not profitable.  Then, we changed course and focused specifically on online social media creation via &lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/originalskateboards" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"&gt;YouTube&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.blippr.com/apps/336658-YouTube" rel="http://www.blippr.com/apps/336658-YouTube.whtml" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span&gt; (&lt;/span&gt;&lt;img src="http://netdna.blippr.com/images/inline-face_07.png?1265851550" height="14" alt="YouTube" width="14" style="display: none;"/&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;)&lt;/span&gt;.  We launched our first video in 2007 — sales went up 40% and never went down. The following year, we invested in the production of an entire series of videos, the first of which was featured on the YouTube front page.  Sales went up 80% and kept climbing.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Original Skateboards grew 432% in profit and 321% overall last year.  And they are enjoying a great 2010.  According to Imbrie, “We are up roughly 300% over top of that growth.  Our focus on social media connection and innovative products seems to have finally paid off. We are now a multi-million dollar company and the 7th most subscribed sports channel in YouTube history with 73,000 subscribers.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Magar shared that more than 15% of their customers come directly from &lt;a href="http://www.facebook.com/chocri" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"&gt;Facebook &lt;/a&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.blippr.com/apps/336650-Facebook" rel="http://www.blippr.com/apps/336650-Facebook.whtml" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span&gt; (&lt;/span&gt;&lt;img src="http://netdna.blippr.com/images/inline-face_05.png?1265851550" height="14" alt="Facebook" width="14" style="display: none;"/&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;)&lt;/span&gt;and &lt;a href="http://twitter.com/chocridotcom" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"&gt;Twitter&lt;/a&gt;.  “The fact that we, as founders and CEOs, can speak to customers directly now makes us much more personal and people connect with us more easily.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Even when there might not be data supporting a direct relationship between social media activity and sales, sometimes other metrics point to the connection.  For example, Magar explained that focus group participants ranked Chocri above their competitors with the main reason being that the company was “sympathetic.”  And their post-purchase survey data taught them the following:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Satisfaction:&lt;/strong&gt; A whopping 100% of our Facebook and Twitter followers described Chocri’s chocolate as “excellent or very good” (compared to 92.1% on average).&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Branding:&lt;/strong&gt; 90% of Chocri Facebook fans and nearly 99% of Chocri Twitter followers said “You guys rock” or “Like you a lot”, compared to the average (88%).&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Recommendations:&lt;/strong&gt; More than 77% of Chocri Facebook fans and nearly 86% of Chocri Twitter followers recommended them to 4-7+ friends, compared to 56% on average.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;h3&gt;Staying Connected to Future Employees&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;center&gt;&lt;img title="hessan tweet" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/hessan-tweet.jpg" height="312" alt="" width="500" style="display: inline;"/&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/center&gt;&lt;p&gt;Having the CEO of a successful organization speak to students is a great way to recruit talent.  Hessan uses social media as an &lt;a href="http://mashable.com/2010/04/19/social-media-recruiters/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"&gt;opportunity to recruit&lt;/a&gt; students to work at Communispace.   “Rather than collecting business cards, I encourage students to stay in touch on Twitter, where I connect them directly with our recruiters, while also taking advantage of the opportunity to see how facile they are online. As a result, we’ve ended up hiring over a dozen new employees this way in the last quarter.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;Customer Engagement&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;Whether it’s fixing a customer service matter or soliciting feedback, interacting directly with customers can prove to be invaluable.  And yes, this can be done on many levels in an organizations, but there is something about conversing with the CEO that’s just different.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Having a CEO involved in marketing and product development conversations on a consumer level encourages participation. Magar tells a story of the time before Chocri was introduced in the U.S.  “We asked on &lt;a href="http://www.createmychocolate.com/blog/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"&gt;our blog&lt;/a&gt; what toppings we should keep (toasted hazelnut), get (cocoa nibs) or toss (hemp seeds) upon entering the U.S. market. Not too long ago, we asked for submissions for ‘phrases’ to be printed in the inside of the packaging. Enjoy.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Hessan also turned a customer service challenge into an opportunity for feedback.  “Early on, when I first launched my &lt;a href="http://twitter.com/CommunispaceCEO" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"&gt;Twitter&lt;/a&gt; account, someone tweeted about an awful experience they had in one of our client communities. I was mortified and tweeted, ‘Ouch, tell me more.’ She was blown away. Ultimately the situation was resolved and this person wrote a long post about how blown away she was that I responded. Since then, we’ve become friends – I’ve helped her with a job transition and she has provided valuable feedback on our software.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;While CEOs like to see data and clear results, it’s important to remember that brand perception and customer service are very real.  Magar suggests “not to ditch it because the direct and easily measured impact (sales) doesn’t directly justify the time spent on it. &lt;p&gt;&amp;#8220;If I were in your situation, I would be making a plan,&amp;#8221; said Cliff Godwin, senior vice president of applications development, during a keynote address Monday at the New England Oracle Applications User Group conference in Worcester, Massachusetts.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Godwin ran down a long list of features and improvements in the current release, EBS 12.1, covering areas such as manufacturing, warehouse management, global tax calculation, patch automation and mobile integration.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Premier Support for EBS 11.5.10 officially ends in November, meaning users who choose to stay on that edition would normally face additional maintenance fees for Extended Support. Last year, citing the bad economy, Oracle announced that it would &lt;a href="http://www.oracle.com/support/library/extended-support-faq.pdf"&gt;waive Extended Support fees&lt;/a&gt; for one year on a number of products, including 11.5.10.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;In any event, it seems that few EBS users have upgraded to R12 so far. Altimeter Group estimates that roughly 5 percent of EBS installed base is running either version 12 or 12.1, said Ray Wang, a partner in the analyst firm.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;That number &amp;#8220;is about right&amp;#8221; given the circumstances, Wang said via e-mail. &amp;#8220;People initially shy away from the first release of any product.&amp;#8221; R12 was released in early 2007, while R12.1 arrived in May 2009. &amp;#8220;It was not till 12.1 that we started to see momentum in adoption.&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Moreover, &amp;#8220;the downturn in the economy and stability of the 11.5 product has probably been a key reason for slower adoption than normal,&amp;#8221; Wang added. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Indeed, during a conference session on R12 upgrades held by Oracle systems integrator USJade, the presenter asked how many of the roughly 100 attendees present had such a project under way, and it appeared that nobody raised a hand.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;But one user who attended the session said her company is now in the planning stages for an upgrade. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&amp;#8220;[The system has] been very stable. But you we&amp;#8217;re at the point where we need to do more. We&amp;#8217;re getting requests from users for enhanced functionality that we see will probably or possibly be available in R12,&amp;#8221; said the user, an Oracle business analyst for a U.S. manufacturing company who spoke on condition of anonymity. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Moreover, the company is using EBS 11.5.9, which is already on Sustaining Support, a maintenance option for older platforms that does not includes services like critical patch updates. &amp;#8220;So any problem that comes along, we are pretty much having to solve ourselves,&amp;#8221; she said. At times, we just need to delete our memberships to some sites, either in an effort to simplify our lives or just because we’ve grown tired of a particular site or service.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;What we often don’t realize when signing up for all these accounts, though, is &lt;strong&gt;how difficult it can be to permanently delete our accounts&lt;/strong&gt; when we’ve had enough. Some require complicated, multi-step processes that can stretch over the course of days (or weeks). Others take less time, but still require multiple steps by the user.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Below we’ll take a look at the account deletion processes of  popular websites and services, and how easy or difficult they make it. There are two options for getting rid of your FB account, one that’s permanent and complete, and one that lets you change your mind later.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you just want to shut down your account for a little while, with the option to reactivate it later, you can deactivate your account. This is simple: just go into your account settings and click on the “deactivate account” link. This immediately makes your account invisible to everyone else on Facebook. If you decide at a later date that you want to reactivate your account, it’s as simple as reactivating.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you’re looking for something a little more permanent, though, you’ll need to submit a request to Facebook. The tricky thing here, though, is that they don’t immediately delete your account, and if at any time before it’s permanently deleted you log in or otherwise interact with Facebook, your deletion request will be canceled. For that reason, it’s a good idea to go around to any computers or devices (like your mobile phone) that you access your account through and log out (deleting saved passwords is also a good idea to prevent an accidental login).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Then you can use the form found &lt;a href="http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=delete_account"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt; to request deletion. Remember not to log into your account at any point after that. There doesn’t seem to be any official notice on how long it takes, but unofficial reports say 14 days. You’ll need to login to your account and then go to the “My Account” link, and then select “Account”. Scroll until you see the “Account Cancellation” section and click on “Cancel Account”. This is where it gets a little bit complicated. MySpace will then send you an email with instructions for completing your account cancellation. Except the email doesn’t come right away, and can take a couple of days to show up. Should all sites employ these methods to help retain users who can’t be bothered to follow a multi-step process? Probably not.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;There are a few things to consider when deciding whether you want to make it complicated for a user to delete their account. First of all, if your deletion process is going to be handled by customer service representatives, do you have the manpower to do so? If you suddenly have a thousand members who want to delete their accounts, do you have the resources to handle that?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Do you expect users to regularly delete their accounts just to sign up for a new one a week later? If it’s complicated to delete their account, they may never sign up for another one, not wanting to go through the process again.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Inactive accounts can also eat up your system resources. Server space can become an issue, especially on very popular sites (or sites with very low budgets). Plus, it makes maintenance and backups more intensive, since there’s more data to deal with. Making it easier for people to delete their accounts if they’re not using your service can help relieve that load.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The level of complexity for the account deletion process is something that needs to be considered on a site-by-site basis. In general, the easier the process is, the better; however, it is important to make sure that users may be having a bad day and make a mistake by closing an account and so they will be happy about getting the account back a couple of days after it was closed.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Making the process way too difficult and time-consuming will turn annoyed customers in angry ones, the ones who will be very likely to spread negative word out there, while annoyed users would probably just close the account and move on, and even maybe come back to the service later. Client interaction can either lead to strong relationships that last a lifetime or make you feel low and worthless.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We look at our designs as our own children, and why not? We create our work from our mind and very being. We have an emotional attachment to our work. But we also need to earn a living from that creativity, and there lies the door to our problems and aggravation.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The question arose on a blog about how to screen a client. Perhaps talking about it in terms of how to spot a sketchy client would be a bit much, but like any freelancer, I need to dump my anxieties on those who sign my paychecks. From corporate clients to the single-owner businesses, clients are our lifeblood… and they can be a cruel, cruel mistress. No wonder we drink.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h4&gt;How to Spot a Sketchy Client&lt;/h4&gt;&lt;p&gt;The number one recommendation of many is to &lt;strong&gt;have a strong contract&lt;/strong&gt;. True, this legal instrument can be easily ignored by clients, who know full well that you may never collect. The contract spells out the terms and rights — terms that will soon be tossed aside by the client (I swear, almost gleefully at times).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The contract is usually the deal-breaker for me. If they refuse a contract, you know you’ll have nothing but trouble ahead, particularly with regards to getting paid. Walking away, then, costs nothing and empowers you. Taking something from the client’s office as you exit makes you feel even better: a pen, a desk clock, the coat hanging on the door (as though you brought it). Call it “Travel and compensation for expenses.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Let’s say you now have a draft contract. After many conversations, calls, emails, meetings and such, you send the contract to the client to sign, but they refuse to sign. You’ll hear so many reasons, and they are all entertaining. Here is a classic exchange of mine:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote class="posterous_medium_quote"&gt;&lt;p&gt;Me: Here’s my contract. Sign it and we’ll begin.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Them: We don’t need a contract. You can trust me.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Me: Oh, I do trust you. But if you get hit by a bus tomorrow, then I’ll need legal documentation to collect from the company.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Them: I won’t get hit by a bus.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Me: It could be a slip in the shower. That’s the number one kille…&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Them: I don’t sign contracts!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Me: How did you get phone service or office space or equipment?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Them: I could hire an art student to do this with no contract and for less money!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Me: Then why did you contact me?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;At this point, I’m usually told to get out.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;One client agreed to a contract but wanted to tack on the phrase “… and anything else needed” to the end of a laundry list of services included in the quoted fee. I pictured myself sitting in a retirement home with the client still demanding design work and being unable to bill them until they had “anything else needed.” That, of course, went nowhere. All in all, a substantial waste of time.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h4&gt;What to include in a contract&lt;/h4&gt;&lt;p&gt;Designers ask me about my contract. It’s a hybrid of the &lt;a href="http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm/standard-agreement"&gt;AIGA&lt;/a&gt;, GAG and common sense changes for the sake of digital-signature contracts. Tad Crawford, the well-known attorney for artists’ rights, has a &lt;a href="http://www.amazon.com/Business-Legal-Forms-Graphic-Designers/dp/1581152744/"&gt;book&lt;/a&gt; with form and contract templates, which I highly recommend.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When a client and I have agreed to a creative brief, I tell the client that I’ll send confirmation. Semantics seem to alleviate the fear of the word “contract.” Quite simply, the contract, as stated, is deemed to have been accepted once the job commences (I email to confirm that they have received the “confirmation,” and I keep all emails pertaining to the contract and to the client confirming their acceptance), and it is legally considered a digital signature when the client responds in the affirmative to begin the project.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Client:&lt;/strong&gt; ________________&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Primary Contact:&lt;/strong&gt; ________________&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Project:&lt;/strong&gt; _______________&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Date of Project:&lt;/strong&gt; _________&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Project Deadline:&lt;/strong&gt; ________&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Purchase Order #:&lt;/strong&gt; _______&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Your Name:&lt;/strong&gt; _____________&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Invoice #:&lt;/strong&gt; _____&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Creative brief:&lt;/strong&gt; [Include the approved creative brief that you wrote. Payment&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt; All invoices are payable within 21 business days of receipt. A $50 service charge is payable on all overdue balances for reissuing each invoice at 45, 60, 75 and 90 days from the date of original invoice. The grant of any license or right of copyright is conditioned on receipt of full payment.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;2. Default in payment&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt; The Client shall assume responsibility for cost outlays by designer in all collections of unpaid fees and of legal fees necessitated by default in payment. Invoices in default will include but are not limited to fees for collection and legal costs.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;3. Cancellation&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt; In the event of cancellation of this assignment, ownership of all copyrights and the original artwork shall be retained by the Designer, and a cancellation fee for work completed, and expenses already incurred, shall be paid by the Client. Cancellation fee is based on the hours submitted, if the project is on an hourly basis or a percentage based on the time estimate for the entire job. A 100% cancellation fee is due once the project has been finished, whether delivered to the client or not. If the project is on an hourly basis and the project is canceled by the client, the client agrees to pay no less than 100% of the hours already billed for the project at the time of cancellation plus a flat fee of $250 or 50% of the remaining hours that were expected to be completed on the project, whichever is greater.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;7. Ownership and return of artwork&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt; The Designer retains ownership of all original artwork, whether preliminary or final, and the Client shall return such artwork within 30 days of use unless indicated otherwise below. If transfer of ownership of all rights is desired, the rates may be increased. If the Client wishes the ownership of the rights to a specific design or concept, these may be purchased at any time for a recalculation of the hourly rate on the time billed or the entire project cost.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;8. Credit Lines&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt; The Designer and any other creators shall receive a credit line with any editorial usage. This warranty does not extend to any uses that the Client or others may make of the Designer’s product that may infringe on the rights of others. Client expressly agrees that it will hold the Designer harmless for all liability caused by the Client’s use of the Designer’s product to the extent such use infringes on the rights of others.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;14. Limitation of liability&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt; Client agrees that it shall not hold the Designer or his/her agents or employees liable for any incidental or consequential damages that arise from the Designer’s failure to perform any aspect of the project in a timely manner, regardless of whether such failure was caused by intentional or negligent acts or omissions of the Designer or Client, any client representatives or employees, or a third party.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;15. Dispute Resolution&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt; Any disputes in excess of the maximum limit for small-claims court arising out of this Agreement shall be submitted to binding arbitration before a mutually agreed-upon arbitrator pursuant to the rules of the American Arbitration Association. The Arbitrator’s award shall be final, and judgment may be entered in any court having jurisdiction thereof. The client shall pay all arbitration and court cost, reasonable attorney’s fees, and legal interest on any award of judgment in favor of the Designer. All actions, whether brought by client or by designer will be filed in the designer’s state/county of business/residence.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;16. Drafting a creative brief and adjusting a contract take a good amount of time and effort. What is most often ignored is the process long before the contract/argument/threats stage. There are red flags and tell-tale signs to look out for when discussing a job with the client. (Just as when you are being interviewed for a full-time position, &lt;em&gt;you&lt;/em&gt; are also interviewing &lt;em&gt;them&lt;/em&gt;.) How do they communicate? Do they constantly interrupt you and boast? That kind of personality will tend to micro-manage and belittle you, after which they will try to cut your bill in half because they “did all the creative work.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Red flags are those little bells that go off in your head, or the saliva you produce as you get ready to vomit. One red flag I like is pulling up to a prospective client’s business address and finding that the building doubles as a crack house. Not getting out of the car at all saves me a great deal of time and effort.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you make it to the reception area, look around. Any awards, plaques or licenses? The tell-tale sign of a summons from the courts pasted across the door? Are the people who walk in and out smiling or bleeding? Unhappy employees mean you will not enjoy working for the client either. If you see a pile of mail on the reception desk, are there envelopes marked “&lt;strong&gt;Final notice&lt;/strong&gt;”? Is everyone well mannered and respectful? Were you kept waiting more than 15 minutes after your appointment time? Is the office neat and clean? If it’s disorganized and filthy, that’s how they will treat you.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The quiet shy client will ask 200 or more people (and animals) for their input on the design and then request all of those things from you. Charge hourly and you’ll be able to retire on the change this client rolls up… if you get paid, that is.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The overexcited type wants to be your friend and hang out at a bar during meetings. Because they are also a raging alcoholic, they won’t remember what they approved or what they asked you or what you told them. If you have a contract, they won’t remember it and will argue that it doesn’t count.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The person who flips through your portfolio like a Las Vegas card dealer is looking to hire a pair of hands to execute their ideas. Go hourly, and make sure to keep the client informed of the hours as you go along, so that they understand why they have a $20,000 letterhead after you’ve had seven sleepless weeks of work.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The corporate art director will be easy-going and have a contract all ready for you. After you’ve signed away all rights and future children, and you’ve delivered the job, they will be as helpless as you to see through a timely payment, so why bother mentioning it? The invoice is passing through layers, and when it reaches the accounting department, you must bear the corporate-mandated pecking order of payment. Freelancer rates just below cockroach exterminator on the list of payees.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I’ve gone through all of these episodes. We all have. So, what do you do? The saving grace is the comfort I get when a client smiles, tells me they love my work and want me to do “something different,” when they do everything on the level and pays me a fair rate in a reasonable time. The Central Statistical Organisation is  due to announce the data on May 31 at 11 a.m. in New Delhi.     &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;India and China, the world’s fastest-growing major  economies, face the threat of the debt crisis cutting demand in  the European Union, the market accounting for a fifth of their  exports. India’s central bank said last week that it will raise  rates only cautiously even though they are “out of line” with  inflation, running close to 10 percent.     &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;“The Reserve Bank of India is likely to follow a measured  approach as global factors contaminate the issues relating to  monetary policy,” said &lt;a href="http://search.bloomberg.com/search?q=Sailesh%20K.%20Jha&amp;amp;site=wnews&amp;amp;client=wnews&amp;amp;proxystylesheet=wnews&amp;amp;output=xml_no_dtd&amp;amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;amp;filter=p&amp;amp;getfields=wnnis&amp;amp;sort=date:D:S:d1"&gt;Sailesh K. The yield  on the 10-year government bond gained 6 basis points to 7.58  percent in Mumbai.     &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Rupee Declines     &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;The rupee advanced 1.4 percent against the U.S. dollar in  Mumbai today. Salaries in India  may increase at the fastest pace in the Asia Pacific in 2010,  according to Hewitt Associates Inc., the Lincolnshire, Illinois-  based human resources adviser.     &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;The economy grew 6 percent in the quarter ended Dec. 31.     &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Car sales by companies including &lt;a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601068&amp;amp;sid=au2pXodcfHb4#"&gt;Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.&lt;/a&gt;  and Tata Motors Ltd. rose 39.5 percent in April from a year  earlier, the biggest jump for the month since 1999, according to  the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.     &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;3G Auction     &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;The government’s auction of high-speed wireless licenses  this month highlights corporate enthusiasm for the nation’s  prospects. Companies including Newbury, England-based Vodafone  Group Plc, the world’s biggest mobile-phone operator by sales,  took part and the sale raised 677.2 billion rupees ($14.3  billion), almost double the amount budgeted by Finance Minister  &lt;a href="http://search.bloomberg.com/search?q=Pranab%20Mukherjee&amp;amp;site=wnews&amp;amp;client=wnews&amp;amp;proxystylesheet=wnews&amp;amp;output=xml_no_dtd&amp;amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;amp;filter=p&amp;amp;getfields=wnnis&amp;amp;sort=date:D:S:d1"&gt;Pranab Mukherjee&lt;/a&gt;.     &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Services including air travel, which account for about 55  percent of India’s economy, expanded the most in 21 months in  April, according to the Purchasing Managers’ Index released by  HSBC Holdings Plc and Markit Economics.     &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;In comparison, China’s $4.3 trillion economy grew 11.9  percent in the first quarter. Bhanumurthy&lt;/a&gt;, an economist at the New Delhi-based National  Institute of Public Finance and Policy.     &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Singh wants to boost growth to 10 percent pace, which he  says is needed to pull the 828 million people living on less  than $2 a day out of poverty.     &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;India, ranked below war-ravaged Ivory Coast and Sri Lanka  for the quality of infrastructure, in March lowered its target  for spending on roads and ports, after failing to complete  planned projects.     &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Projected investment in electricity, roads and wharves may  reach 407 billion rupees in the five years to March 2012, half  the original goal, according to the Planning Commission, a  government office that sets investment targets.     &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Bhanumurthy said companies’ costs rise as they invest in  their own power generators to meet a shortage in supplies. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;div&gt;  				&lt;p&gt;Vineet Nayar’s &lt;a href="http://www.amazon.com/Employees-First-Customers-Second-Conventional/dp/1422139069/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;s=books&amp;amp;qid=1274869054&amp;amp;sr=8-1" target="_blank"&gt;Employees First, Customers Second&lt;/a&gt; (EFCS) is a first person CEO’s account of the transformation of their enterprise.  The book is a refreshing and frank look at the challenges facing leaders looking to transform their company, culture and employees.  Nayar discusses his experience leading HCLT and its transformation from a $700 million dollar company that was losing market share to a $2 billion dollar company at the front of their market.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Nayar provides a clear, well-written and frank discussion of the issues he faced and his personal thought process and learning journey during the transformation.  It is rare that a sitting CEO provides such a frank and honest discussion of the company and personal journey.  At 185 pages in a small format, the book is an excellent size and length for executives to read, reflect on and consider how it fits into their strategies and plans.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Recommended reading for executives who are frustrated with the current structure and culture of the modern organization.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;CEO and BU executives will gain an understanding of new views on leveraging the talent, knowledge and passion of their people both internally and more importantly with customers.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;HR and Staff Executives will be exposed to a different view of their role.  This is not a direct focus of the book, but reading it will help you think differently about what you do and how it creates/connects to value.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Individuals will see an example of the actions and evolution involved in realizing a new way of working.  Just about everyone wants to work this way and this book provides an example that can help crystallize your thoughts and how you communicate with your peers and management.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;It is particularly recommended to read now or at a minimum have read during the summer months so these ideas can influence their strategic planning and initiatives for 2011.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;This book will provide fresh views and a new configuration of approaches to create a new style of organization.  A list of strengths and challenges are at the end of this review.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;The book covers a number of ‘tools’ and ideas that are particularly helpful for understanding what you can do to change your enterprise.  Many of these ideas are based on existing thoughts, but Nayar presents them in a fresh view integrated around the idea of putting employees first.  Some of the tools included in the book include:&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Value Zone – the place in the organization where the company creates value with the customer.  This zone is at the bottom of the enterprise not the top and that reality shapes much of the thinking in the book.  You may recognize this in other words as the ‘moment of value’&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Mirror/Mirror – a process where the company and individuals confront the truth of their situation, strengths and weaknesses, and what they need to do about it.  This is a direct descendent of confronting reality in the TQM movement.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Transparent House – the role and change created by making traditional management information, plans, evaluations etc available to all.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Zero Tickets – the notion that enabling functions not only work to resolve issues but need to be dedicated to eliminating them.  This again builds on TQM principles.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;True 360 evaluation and feedback, which can be easily thought of as old hat but which Nayar gives a fresh perspective and experience.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Overall this is a good book and one that will help every executive think about how their company works and what it does to create value.  It is important to note that while Nayar’s company is based in India, his business is global and these techniques are working in multiple geographies, cultures and workforces.  This means that his experience is readily transferable to other organizations and situations.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Strengths:&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Clear and comprehensive in terms of describing the business situation and the actions they took to address the issues.  There is no consultant-ese or academic mumbo jumbo, just clear thinking clearly explained.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Solution specific in terms of defining specific initiatives, tools, things that the company did to create results and address issues.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Comprehensive discussing multiple aspects of the transformation from the way they worked with customers, to enabling functions, evaluations, transparency and the changing role of the CEO and their office.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Insightful as Nayar reflects on what has happened at the most basic and fundamental level.  For example his discussion of the evolved nature of 360-degree feedback (p. 116 – 126) gives this tool a new power and rational.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Focused and humble as Nayar accomplishes all of this in just 185 pages without aggrandizing himself, his company or its track record.  This gives the book a clear and honest tone that puts conviction behind the words.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Realistic as Nayar recognized and values the people who say ‘yes, but’ he then goes on to share the insights and changes in the solution generated by people who have legitimate and value issues with the stated direction.  This is a balanced and mature approach to change that is refreshingly different than branding people as the enemy.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;Challenges:&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Nayar’s discussion of the business issues and situations are often at a high level.  While I understand the business and publishing rational behind this, it does weaken the context and may lead some people to think that this does not apply to them – it does.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Nayar presents a fairly straightforward time progression; we did this, then that, then that.  This is a strength in making the book clear and focused, but it has caused Nayar to omit what I am sure are some of the&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;The book is somewhat impersonal, not from the CEO’s perspective, but from the perspective of the people a HCLIT who we hear little about and even less from.  It is paradoxical in that the book is about putting employees first, but we really never hear from the employees.  A brief first person story of the transformations that an individual manager or front line person when through would have made this a five star book.&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;Overall the challenges do not rob the value of the ideas, experience and insight presented in this book.  Read it and think about its applicability to your company, industry and situation.  There is much here to think about and even better a deep example of what one company did.&lt;/p&gt;
